SPINAL STENOSIS is a brutal death/slam project founded in 2019 by Carlos San José (INNER DARKNESS, DEVILTOOK, STRAPPADO, and EXSANGUINATION ENTRAILS) as a solo project. After five years of performing as a duo with Luis, the band is releasing its debut album, titled “Paralyzed.”
The album, just over half an hour long, adheres perfectly to every aspect of the aforementioned style and does not deviate from the established norms of a genre characterized by staccato rhythms, a dense and monolithic sound, guttural vocals alternating with growls, and a constant combination of speed and relentless rhythms, without resorting to overly complex patterns or elaborate arrangements. Furthermore, the lyrics focus on the themes of the band and the album title, which are nothing other than rare cellular diseases and various laboratory-related topics. There are also no particularly standout solos, as the focus is entirely on composing rousing tracks. “Fetus in Fetu” is a prime example of this: the sound of the rhythm guitars is as dense as it is relentless, and these are then mixed with tracks featuring mid-tempo passages like “Brain Damage,” complemented by slap bass techniques. The result is a predictable yet effective style.
Fans of bands like PEELIGFLESH, DEVOURMENT, VISCERAL DISGORGE, PUTRIDITY, or KRAANIUM should keep an eye out for the new band SPINAL STENOSIS if they're into brutal death metal with slam influences.
