Shouter’s ferocious vocal performance, combined with the rock-solid guitars of Johnny Hell and Hellkymic Frenk, Dave Filth’s ever-present bass (what a pleasure to hear such a powerful bass line) and Metfrey’s technical prowess on the drums, delivers intense and dynamically varied metal in the style of bands such as Benediction and Bolt Thrower. The stated aim is to create an extremely rhythmic metal sound which – unlike representatives of the groove genre such as Pantera and Lamb of God – does not maintain rhythm as the sole dynamic throughout the song, but often allows it to culminate in death metal outbursts reminiscent of Malevolent Creation.
Lyrically, OBBROBRIUS draws on true-crime stories and post-apocalyptic cinema, the recent Covid-19 pandemic and horror literature to explore the theme of psychological distress. Their lyrics depict people struggling with their anger (‘Blood In My Eyes’), the spread of fear through television news during the pandemic (‘Chronic Sickness’) and even monsters that embody our nightmares (‘Leviathan’s Cage’). Unlike thrash metal and hardcore, however, where the ‘great conspiracy’ is the product of the world’s powerful elite who monopolise money and political decision-making, OBBROBRIUS views human suffering and our enslavement as the result of a divine plan in which the reins of our existence are held by the guardians of the Great Powers (Yog-Sothoth from “All In One And One In All”) and dark legions (“As Angels Fall”).
